FINAL DAY - Day 59 – Tue Mar 1 – Trip to Mustang Island 2011
“Happy March 1st”.
A short 2 hrs later, we were in Branson West where we off loaded the PT Cruiser. Wanda needed to go to the Post Office and pick up a LOT of mail. JW went on to Sams Trailer Service to top off the propane tank and then on to the Branson View Campground & “HOME”. It took JW a couple of hrs to setup the MH and then we needed sustenance (food) so, Fuddruckers was our next destination.
As we write this “blog” it brings to mind just how much we appreciate our WIFI “Hotspot”, High speed internet, Yea.
Looking back at our time on Mustang Island, Port Aransas, Tx., we will miss the sights, sounds, climate, and fellow “Winter Texans”. We will really miss our time spent at Grace Community Church and the blessings that came forth. Pastor Mark is an excellent preacher/teacher and we will miss him. We will miss the Gulf beach that we saw every day, the sound of the surf that could be heard throughout the entire RV park, the beach kites & kite surfers. The Port A Ferry that took us from the mainland to Port Aransas, the The multitude of playful dolphins & the many BIG oil tankers that we saw. We will remember the Island cuisine and atmosphere of the many restaurants that we visited. It was a very relaxing 2 months and provided us with many pleasant memories that will stay with us for a long time.
Thanks for travelling along with us this year, we hope it was as entertaining for you as it was for us. As I find time, I will add some pictures of our trip to this blog. Don’t worry about missing it, I’ll post a notice on FaceBook and in an email.
As we complete writing this years blog, we are planning to go to either Florida or San Diego, CA next year & we would like to invite all of you to journey with us as we once again share our adventures and mis-adventures. That’s all for now, thanks again for keeping up with us. See y'all down the road . . .

Day 57 – Sun Feb 27 – Day 58 – Mon Feb 28 – Trip to Mustang Island 2011
We had planned to fuel up at Gainesville, Tx but never did see a Murphys station so we drove on to Marietta, Ok. The gas gauge showed 1/8th of a tank as we pulled into a 66 station. Apparently the fuel gauge reads a little “off” as JW put 60.8 gal in the tank (it holds 75 gal) $3.29 p/gal, $200.00, Ouch!
On a non related note, JW thinks we have a battery going bad. When he shut the MH off to fuel, it wouldn’t start back up later. The station manager had some jumper cables and got the job done. (JW had bought a 1000 Amp Battery Pack in Corpus Christi, but it wasn’t charged up yet). JW has noticed that when we park the coach overnight with the shore power plugged in, the coach’s chassis batter is just fine, so will have to have this problem investigated.
Anyhow, we arrived at “Hidden Lake” at about 2:30 or so. Got all setup, had supper and watched one of our favorite shows, The Amazing Race. Tomorrow, Joplin, stay tuned . . .
--------------------------------------------------------
Monday – Once again, we left at 10:00am headed North. Pretty windy today (strong winds out of the west). We planned to fuel up in Sapulpa, OK, so JW exited onto Hwy 66 into Sapulpa and wouldn’t you know it, somehow he missed the Murphy station (This seems to be becoming as habit). Sooo, on to Joplin. (We finally gassed up at Miami, OK on the turnpike).
We arrived at the Joplin KOA at approx 5:00pm, setup and met John and Peggy Danner for vittles. John and Peggy are good friends of ours and used to work at Silver Dollar City with us. They took us to “Jim Bob’s Steak and Ribs” on Rangeline, where we ate and visited for a couple of hours. Back at the MH at 8:00pm. Tomorrow, Branson . . .

Day 56 – Sat Feb 26 – Trip to Mustang Island 2011
As we left, we just had to take one last drive down the “beach drive”. Got some pictures of the MH set against the Gulf. Looked pretty good. We opted to take the short drive off the Island, so instead of taking the ferry (which we really like), we went south to S. Padre and then North thru Corpus Christi saving about 20 – 30 miles. With gas at $3.20 plus a gal, we felt we needed to save as much gas as possible.
JW had planned to stay in Austin but it was only a 4 hr drive so drove on to West, Tx. Instead. 6 Hr total driving time. We had to stop for gas at Pleasanton (Birthplace of the Cowboy) $3.16 a gal. After a short fill up (51.8 gal, $164.00) and sandwiches for lunch, we were on the road once again.
After we went thru San Antonio, we started seeing signs that I-35 was closed in Austin and to take a detour. We thought it was really going to be a problem but it was four lanes all the way and not that far off course. We arrived in West, Tx at the KOA at 5:00. 7 hr after we left the Island.
Tomorrow, Sunday the 27th will be a very short day. We plan to drive to Ardmore, OK (2 hrs and 46 minutes) and stay at Hidden Lake RV Park. We have stayed at Hidden Lake now for a couple years and really like the place. Monday, we’ll drive to Joplin, Mo and stay at the Downstream Casino (free camping and “BUFFET”. Stay tuned . . .

Day 55 – Fri Feb 25 – Trip to Mustang Island 2011
We visited with our neighbors on both sides of us and soaked up some more of this South Texas Gulf sun. Ah yes, the good life.
We both donned our swimming apparel and headed for the Gulf waters. We can officially say, “We have now put our feet in the Gulf”. And that’s about all we did because the water was not very warm, cold as a matter of fact. Oh well, we had good intentions.
As this was our last night on the Island, we just “had to go” back to Castaways for their filleted Giant Tiger Shrimp on the half shell. Best shrimp on the Island. If you’re ever in Port A, be sure to visit the “Castaways”, you won’t be sorry.
Before heading to the MH, we had to go to the Islands one and only grocery store for some much needed supplies. When we got back to the MH, Wanda finished cleaning and putting up some clothing while JW continued for a while in preparing to leave, lawn chairs put up, check; Old Glory taken down and safely stowed, check; Ladder secured to the back of the MH, check; flat screen HDTV safely removed from the dash and stowed away, check; etc, etc, etc.
Beddie bye . . . stay tuned.
Day 54 – Thur Feb 24 – Trip to Mustang Island 2011
JW washed the Motorhome while Wanda went into Port A’s laundrymat. At 5:00 in the evening we went to La Playa Mexican Restaurant. Wanda had wanted to try some “fish tacos”. She said they were actually pretty good. She did say however, she liked the shrimp taco a little better than the fish taco.
As we returned to the MH along the beach road, we saw lots of folks fishing, flying kites and “kite surfing”.
Day 53 – Wed Feb 23 – Trip to Mustang Island 2011
Day 52 – Tue Feb 22 – Trip to Mustang Island 2011
Day 51 – Mon Feb 21 – Trip to Mustang Island 2011
We decided to drive over to Aransas Pass and eat dinner at “The Butterchurn”. When we got there we found they had closed at 2:30 for Iowa Day, so we drove back to Port A and ate my favorite food here on the Island, Tiger Shrimp grilled on the half shell, at “Castaways”. Then it was back to “On the Beach”. We had thought about looking at cars, but decided to wait until tomorrow.
Day 50 – Sun Feb 20 – Trip to Mustang Island 2011
After lunch out, we came back to the MH to watch the “Daytona 500”, then just relaxed the rest of the day. The winds were pretty high today, so we just opened the door and windows and enjoyed the cool breeze. The temperatures started dropping early and I ended up having to put on a sweatshirt in the middle of the afternoon. We watched “The Amazing Race” and are looking forward to the rest of this season’s series (JW said, “Go Cowboys, I agree). We also watched “Undercover Boss”. And, believe it or not, we are going to bed much earlier than last night.
Day 49 – Sat Feb 19 – Trip to Mustang Island 2011
We pretty much stayed in all day with the doors and windows open and the fans blowing, but in the afternoon decided to sit out in the sun for a while, (almost too long a while). Around five o’clock we did leave to go to the Pizzaria for dinner. We once again just beat the crowd. They say they have the best Pizza in town (I think they have the only Pizza in town), but it was good. They had a salad bar and Pizza Buffet, all you can eat, for less than $8.00. We thought that was quite reasonable.
We drove along the beach on our way to dinner and saw a ship towing an oil rig platform out into the Gulf. That was a first for us and we were a little disappointed that we weren’t at the Park when they brought it out. We thought that would have been quite interesting. Following dinner we did our usual, returned back to “On The Beach” for our evening of TV watching. We stayed up way to late, “The Good, The Bad and The Ugly” was on and didn’t go off until 2:15 a.m. Why do we always do this on a Saturday night when we know we have to be up early to go to church?

Day 48 – Fri Feb 18 – Trip to Mustang Island 2011
Chris got here about 9 a.m. and started removing the propane tank. I guess I won’t be using the cook stove for preparing breakfast this morning; and, for the next 24 hours, any hot water we want will have to come from the microwave. What did we do before we had all these modern conveniences?
Well, here it is 6:00 p.m. and we just made it back to the coach. Today was a very fulfilling day. We left here a little after 1:00 to go check out the Dolphin Tour. It was from 2:00 – 3:30 and we saw bunches of dolphins. It was great being out on the water. While we were out on the boat a large tanker went right by us and the Dolphins were riding the wave in front of the tanker. It was great to see them jumping out of the water and not having to go in circles. What fun! While we were on the Dolphin tour, we ran into an elderly couple from McPherson Ks. The lady (who was in a wheelchair) had not brought a jacket so JW took his jean jacket off and let her use it to stay warm. She was very appreciative.
After seeing the dolphins we went to Beaches for an early dinner, then on to Barnacle Bills to go out on the Pier. We saw four guys out surfing, a young boy and his grandpa fishing (and they were actually catching fish), and a very curious pelican. JW videoed a guy cleaning and filleting a fish and then feeding the carcass to the pelican. On the way back to the coach we drove by to see how things were going with the propane tank. It was all done and does it ever look good. You’d think it was brand new. So all in all, we have had a very satisfying day.
We enjoyed the Dolphin Sightseeing Tour so much that we have decided we will go out again, this time we go with a different company so we can compare. It is supposed to be in the 70’s the rest of the time we are here. We may get some rain next week, but think we can work the tour around the rainy days. One week from today we head back north. We’ve just about done everything we had on our “To Do” and “Want To Do” lists. JW says we still need (want) to go for a dip in the Gulf. We’ll (Brrr) see about that.
Thursday, February 17, 2011
Day 47 – Thur Feb 17 – Trip to Mustang Island 2011
JW, once again, had to watch his favorite “rerun”. Had a great breakfast and then went to work hooking up the rear camera. Let me tell you about this camera, “It ain’t cracked up to be what JW thought it was gonna be”. Worked and worked trying to get it to work, to no avail. Upon close inspection, found corrosion on the transmitter plug contacts. JW cleaned them as best as he could but still the camera would not work. Chris, the maint. Man showed up and we finally came to the conclusion that we needed to “cut out” the offending corrosion laden plug. Got the camera to work finally using a connection to the reverse light. JW and Chris will run a line from the coach battery on Saturday to make a semi permanent constant power connection. Stay tuned.
While Chris was here we talked about the propane tank’s paint job. Wanda and JW both feel that it really needs to be done, so we gave Chris authorization to remove the tank and do the paint job. Chris will start that job on Friday morning. Stay tuned for results on this.
No Dolphin tour today but JW says it is on the schedule for Friday. We’ll see. Guess we’re staying tuned for a lot. Well, stay tuned . . .
Wednesday, February 16, 2011
Day 46 – Wed Feb 16 – Trip to Mustang Island 2011
The propane guy actually showed up about 3 hours earlier today than he did a couple weeks ago. He also confirmed the thoughts about the propane paint job but, he said the tank wasn’t really in that bad shape. Propane was $3.00 a gallon today, down 11 cents from last time.
We decided to not go anywhere, it was 2:00 pm. We got a couple lawn chairs out and sat out in the sun, very relaxing. Light breeze and the sounds of the surf could be heard throughout the park. AND, tonight at 7:00 was the premiere of this seasons Survivor. That is just about our favorite TV show. Stay tuned . . .
Day 45 – Tue Feb 15 – Trip to Mustang Island 2011
We went to Roberts Point and watched the Dolphins. There were a lot of them and they were really playful. We watched them for about 2 hours then it was Dinner time. We went to “Beaches Restaurant” but found out they were closed on Tuesdays so our next choice was the “La Playa Mexican Restaurant”. Back to the MH. One day soon, we want to go on one of the Dolphin Boat Tours. Maybe Thursday or Friday, stay tuned . . .
Tuesday, February 15, 2011
Day 44 – Mon Feb 14 – Trip to Mustang Island 2011
We wanted to check out the gas station at the Walmart in Portland to see if it had better access for the MH than the one in Aransas Pass for when we fill up on our way back to Missouri. We decided to get the oil changed in the car. We had some grocery shopping to do and JW needed to pick up the items he needed to hook up the backup camera and paint the propane tank. Timing was great. The oil change was finished just as we finished our shopping.
When we got back to Port A we decided to have the Early Bird Special at The Castaways for dinner. We both had the Grilled Shrimp with Rice, it wasn’t as good as normal, the shrimp was a little overcooked, but it was still good.
We got home early and settled in for another relaxing evening, I thought. However, we stopped by the office and picked up our mail. There was a bunch, forms that had to be filled out and returned to SDC, bills that are due, and the letter from Unemployment regarding my citizenship, or the lack thereof. Sooooo, I spent the evening filling out forms, digging through our records to get a copy of my birth certificate, and writing letters, in an attempt to get my benefits released. So much for a relaxing evening.
DAY 43 – Sun Feb 13 – Trip to Mustang Island 2011
JW wanted to go to Corpus Christi to get a 12 Volt test probe, so after services we returned to the MH to change clothes, then we headed out. We had lunch at Olive Garden (JW had his usual – Spaghetti and Meatballs), and I must say I had my Olive Garden usual, Stuffed Chicken Marsala. JW ordered for me. The food was great. Following lunch we decided we really did not feel like shopping so headed back to “On the Beach” where we spent the afternoon relaxing and napping.
DAY 42 – Sat Feb 12 – Trip to Mustang Island 2011
DAY 41 – Fri Feb 11 – Trip to Mustang Island 2011
About all we did today was eat and relax. We had lunch at Virginia’s on the Bay, then went down to the Park to watch the boats come in, and watch the dolphins play. We left there at 5 p.m. and decided to have dinner at DQ. We are struggling to keep our weight in check with all the eating out, but so far have remained successful.
DAY 40 – Thur Feb 10 – Trip to Mustang Island 2011
The weather remained cool and windy all day again today. We decided to eat at, (can you believe it), Taco Bell. I used to eat there every chance I got, but we don’t eat there much anymore. I enjoyed it but it wasn’t as good as the ones in Missouri. It was nice to get back to our MH and settled in for an evening of relaxation and TV.
DAY 39 – Wed Feb 9 – Trip to Mustang Island 2011
DAY 38 – Tue Feb 8 – Trip to Mustang Island 2011
We both have had more pain today, mine in my lower back and right leg, it feels as though I might have a pinched nerve; and, JW continues to have swelling and pain in his wrist. However, we didn’t let that slow us down. We decided to try out “The Butter Churn”. It is a buffet with home cooked food, (just like Grandmas). It was really quite tasty and the price is one of the most reasonable we have experienced since we got to S Texas.
DAY 37 – Mon Feb 7 – Trip to Mustang Island 2011
Before returning to Port A we stopped off at Walmart in Aransas Pass to purchase a few groceries and bumped into a lady that works a couple of months a year helping with Crafts at SDC. It’s a small, small world. She introduced us to a new eating place, (new to us), The Butter Churn. We didn’t eat there today because we had previous plans to go back to Port A and “Virginia’s on the Bay.””
I have had quite a lot of pain in my right leg today and JW is suffering bunches with his wrist. I ‘spect we are looking at a change in the weather. When our bodies speak to us, who needs the weatherman? We had a cool, but very enjoyable day.
Sunday, February 13, 2011
DAY 36 – Sun Feb 6 – Trip to Mustang Island 2011
What a great service. It is so good to be able to meet together for praise, worship and teaching of the Word. The Holy Spirit is moving mightily here on the Island. Following services we were privileged to witness yet another baptism in the Gulf of Mexico. The weather was great and the Gulf waters were quite smooth. It is so exciting to see both young and the more mature accepting Jesus as their Savior and then following the example of Jesus by water baptism. It is such a blessing to be able to attend services on Sunday mornings. We are loving it and will sure miss it when we get back to Missouri, where once again we will be working on Sunday’s. It is great to work with Christians, but fellowshipping together is very important.
Following the baptism after church this morning, we went to Virginia’s on the Bay for lunch. I had the Cajun Dump (crab legs, Gulf shrimp, sausage, corn on the cob and new potatoes, I brought half of it home for another meal), JW had his usual, Mahi Mahi. We are now settling in, preparing for the Super Bowl.
The game wasn’t to start until 6:30 (we thought) so JW had the TV tuned to some old L&O reruns and at 6:00 decided to watch some of the pregame. The game was already going. JW thought the paper said 6:30 central but must have been eastern. We started watching just as the Packers made their first touchdown. The Super Bowl was pretty much what JW thought it would be, (he predicted Packers 27 – Steelers 24). Not a real exciting game and the halftime show was terrible. The Black Eye Peas butchered their own songs. We missed the first 12 minutes of the 1st qtr so missed the beginning of the game also, BUT thanks to FaceBook and local TV coverage, we were unfortunate enough to hear Christina Aguilera sing (and JW used that term, sing, very loosely) the National Anthem. In JW’s opinion, she disgraced the song. Her voice was all over the place, up and down and to top it off, she got the words wrong. Who hires these people anyway? The Blackhawk hockey player, Jim Cornelison, who sang the National Anthem at the start of the Green Bay-Chicago playoff game was a 100 times better than Aguilera. Just JW’s opinion.
Football is over, time to move on to more important stuff. After JW thinks about that for a while, he’ll tell you what it is. Stay tuned . . .
DAY 35 – Sat Feb 5 – Trip to Mustang Island 2011
When we got back to “On the Beach” we were informed that the cable had been cut between the Island and Corpus Christi and they didn’t know when we were going to have TV. Sure hope they get it fixed in time for the Super Bowl. We decided to watch a couple of DVD’s before turning in for the night. We watched “The Patriot” and “Glory”. I saw all of the first movie and about half of the second before I fell asleep.
The weather today was quite nice and made it enjoyable to be out.
DAY 33 – Thur Feb 3; DAY 34 – Fri Feb 4 – Trip to Mustang Island 2011
Today was a little warmer. I got the carpet in the bedroom and the hall shampooed. It sure looks good now. I will do the front of the coach another day.
Around 5 p.m. we were getting cabin fever so decided we would go out to Seafood and Spaghetti to try their Italian Food. I had lasagna and JW had his usual, spaghetti. He really doesn’t know there is some really great Italian Food out there, all he ever gets when we go Italian is spaghetti. Then he remarks that he likes my spaghetti better. Oh well, I guess some people are just not adventurous, I personally like to try different foods. Some I’ll eat again others I know not to eat again.
When we got back to "On The Beach" we could not get any reception on our TV. JW called the office. They said all the Island was in the same predicament. We decided to watch some DVD’s. That put a little different twist on things. They don’t know when the cable will be back up.
Wednesday, February 2, 2011
DAY 32 – Wed Feb 2 – Trip to Mustang Island 2011
Propane truck showed up at 5:00 pm. Waited the whole day, but ya never know what time he’ll be here. I think everyone in the park needed propane. $3.11 a gal.
We saved money today by eating all our meals at home. JW got a large portion of his winter chores completed, while I worked on my Sudoku book. I did some pretty tough puzzles so not sure it was an extremely relaxing day. In fact, I ended up with a headache and tension in my neck and shoulders.
We just finished dinner and now plan to take in some TV and attempt to have a relaxing evening. We are going to have another cold night, low is supposed to be 25. Guess we’ll have to leave the water running again tonight. Corpus Christi is supposed to get ice and snow for the next couple of days, here on the Island, they are just forecasting lower than normal temperatures. It is supposed to be back up in the 60’s by Sunday. A productive and kinda relaxing day.
DAY 31 – Tue Feb 1 – Trip to Mustang Island 2011
We went to Corpus Christi for supplies and to eat at iHop. JW actually decided to leave before his favorite show (In the Heat of the Night) even started, so we got away fairly early. We ate, went grocery shopping at Wal-Mart and H.E.B. Plus, then it was off to McDonalds to use their WIFI. H.E.B. stores are really big in Texas with most of them kinda like a small Wal-Mart. The H.E.B. Plus compares to a Wal-Mart Super Center. JW wanted to know what H.E.B. stood for and an H.E.B. employee told him it stands for the founders son, Howard Edward Butt. Their store signs say, “Here, Everything’s Better”. They are a good store but their prices are higher than Wal-Mart.
After returning to the Island and home, we rested for a while and prepared for the onslaught of cold winter air which is on its way to S. Texas. The Islands temperature was only to fall to the upper 20s low 30s but inland it dropped into the teens and lower up north. Around fiveish, we decided to try out a new seafood place (new to us), Fins Grill and Icehouse. Really good fresh seafood. BUT, we both decided that we think Virginia’s on the Bay is still the best so far. Only 20 to 25 more restaurants to try before we leave. Let’s see, where shall we go tomorrow . . .
Monday, January 31, 2011
DAY 30 – Mon Jan 31 – Trip to Mustang Island 2011
JW is outside talking to our neighbor and shaking the rugs, so I guess I’d better sign off for now and get some smothered chicken started for dinner. Time continues to fly. I can’t believe it is actually the last day of January.
DAY 29 – Sun Jan 30 – Trip to Mustang Island 2011
After church services we drove down on the beach, which has been almost a daily event, watched the tide for a while, then went back to the coach to watch some football and relax. The tide was really up today and we could see white caps for as far out as we could see. It was really different today, but they were forecasting a storm like we had the first night we were here. Thank God we didn’t get the wind or the rain, but by looking at the Gulf, someone must have.
At 5:00 we decided to go to Virginia’s on the Bay. What an excellent choice. The weather was beautiful so we ate in the open air and watched the ships and dolphins. The food was excellent. I had grilled shrimp and JW had Mahi Mahi. Service, atmosphere and food were all very good. We plan to go back while we are here and have their Cajun Dump. When that day comes we’ll let you know how it is. Following that wonderful meal we went back to the MH, watched some TV and JW spent until 2:30 a.m. on the computer.
DAY 28 – Sat Jan 29 – Trip to Mustang Island 2011
DAY 27 – Fri Jan 28 – Trip to Mustang Island 2011
DAY 26 – Thur Jan 27 – Trip to Mustang Island 2011
Last night we decided that today we would get up early and head out to Corpus Christi to visit the Lexington. JW thought he would try to be up by 8:30 and made it by 9:00 so we will be out of here shortly. We got away from the MH at about 10:00.
Before leaving for Corpus Christi, we went down on the beach. The water was beautiful, there were no white caps, in fact, it looked like a big sheet of glass. It was the prettiest we have seen it since we have been here. When we left the Motor Home it was 55 degrees and the high was supposed to be around 60. It actually got up to about 65. What a beautiful day.
We arrived at the Lexington at 10:55, just in time to make it to the free movie (Fighter Pilot)that is included in the price of your ticket. Following the movie we went to lunch in the “Mess Area”. JW had a Hot Ham and Cheese sandwich and a Chili Dog. I had a Philly Steak sandwich. By the time we finished eating we had about four hours to tour the ship.
They had five different tours. We completed four of them. By the time we had finished those we were to tired and our bodies were aching so badly from climbing all the ladders that we decided to skip Tour No. 3. When we were up on the Flight Deck we saw a big Freighter Ship going through the Channel into Corpus Christi. There were airplanes on that end of the deck that had been used as Trainer Planes for numerous battles. There was so much to see. We visited the ”Live Aboard” section of the ship, which showed where the Scouts bunk, eat, and shower. There was a lot of renovation going on all over the ship, so much of it was blocked off and unattainable. However, the Tour paths were well marked and easy to follow. It was a great day and well worth our $10.90 tickets to get in. Our parking was free and we rode the tram upon both entering and leaving the ship. All in all, it was a day well spent; very educational.
When we got back to Port A, we went to “Castaways” for their scrumptious Grilled Shrimp and rice. I was so tired when we got back to the MH that I fell asleep about 6:00 p.m. and did not wake up until 8:15 on Friday morning.
DAY 25 – Wed Jan 26 – Trip to Mustang Island 2011
Today is our grandson’s birthday so had to send him Birthday wishes via FB. It is amazing how quickly these kids grow up. It won’t be long until he is a teenager, and he is Wanda’s youngest son’s child. My how time does get away from us. Speaking of time, I can’t believe that in just a month we will have to be heading back North. This month has flown by. We have accomplished some of the things we wanted to get done this winter, but still have several to go.
The weather was beautiful today. We should have been out walking on the beach, but didn’t get out until 5:00, when we went to “Jay’s Seafood and Spaghetti Works” for dinner. They had great soup and dinner rolls. We could have made a meal out of that, however, we ordered the special fish plate. Buy one at $13.99 and get the second for a penny. The meal was good, and we will return, but will try the Italian Food next time. JW will (as always) have spaghetti and Wanda will try their Lasagna or Manicotti. Following the meal we headed back to the MH to relax (some more) and watch TV.
DAY 24 – Tue Jan 25 – Trip to Mustang Island 2011
Last night (this morning around 1:30 am) JW actually got enough WIFI signal (now that’s a rarity down here) to update the blog some. Hopefully today we’ll get it completely updated. We plan to go to Aransas Pass (for some more WIFI) do some exploring on the Island and take some pictures of some of the places that JW forgot to take pictures of.
We made it to Aransas Pass and decided to have Pizza at the Pizza Hut for an early dinner. It was the best Pizza we’ve had in a long time. Well, it was the only Pizza we have had in a long time, due to our dieting, but putting that aside it was very, very good Pizza. On the way back to Port A we stopped at H.E.B. and bought some more Honey Crisp Apples. Man, are they ever expensive. We got four Honey Crisp and two Fuji’s for $13.80. But, they ARE good.
Tuesday, January 25, 2011
DAY 23 – Mon Jan 24 – Trip to Mustang Island 2011
McDonalds was the next stop and WIFI was available. JW didn’t have the blog written up so we couldn’t update the blog online (I thought that was one of the reasons we needed WIFI???) Wanda did get our banking updated and her Unemployment filed though.
Back home by 6:00 pm. JW wanted to watch “House”. Wanda fixed her famous “pepper steak” for supper. Awww, very good day.
DAY 22 – Sun Jan 23 – Trip to Mustang Island 2011
We ate lunch at Pelican’s Landing Restaurant. Wanda had some very tasty Lobster Bisque while JW settled for a salad.
Wanda needed to file her UI Claim so we went up by the RV Park office, where WIFI was supposed to be good, however, to her dismay we found that WIFI is still basically non-exsistent at “On the Beach”. JW searched out areas that reception should be good, but found that even the so called “WIFI Hot Spots” were not working today, so I guess we will have to go to the mainland (Aransas Pass) at McDonalds to get a decent WIFI speed.
After lunch and trying to find WIFI, we went back to the MH and watched AFC & NFC Championship football games.
DAY 21 – Sat Jan 22 – Trip to Mustang Island 2011
DAY 19 – 20, Thur Jan 20 – Fri Jan 21 - Trip to Mustang Island 2011
First things first, our daily drive/walk down the beach. Sure is interesting how the surf changes each day, seems like it’s never the same. After breakfast, we found the nearest Wallie World (still looking for a wireless backup camera system). JW actually found one at this Wal-Mart, but it’s only good for up to 12 ft. Not even half the distance of our motor home. O’Reillys say they can order one and have it in in a few days or so. JW is looking at one on Amazon.com that is actually for a long truck/ RV.
When we left for Corpus it was almost 60 and at 3:30 it was back down to 50 and the winds are predicted to be 25 to 30 mph. Low supposed to be near 44 tonight. JW checked the weather for Branson and it shows low tonight 9. 9 ? ? ? Brrr, glad we’re in S. Texas and facing a low in the 40s. JW says he doesn’t miss the snow at all, that’s one of the reasons we’re in Texas.
On Friday we drove up the beach about 3 miles to Nueces County Park. We watched sea critters. Back at the MH, we had Mountainman stew for supper.
DAY 18 – Wed Jan 19 – Trip to Mustang Island 2011
We headed back up to Roberts point again to watch Porpoises and big ships. A lot of the ships we see are tankers but quite a few of them are local barges, sightseeing cruises and fishing rigs. Once in a while we also happened to see a Coast Guard craft.
We, once again, decided to try the local “fare”. Tonight, it was “Moby Dick’s” turn. Good, fresh, seafood (and lots of it). JW scarfed his right down but it was too much for Wanda, hers made another meal later. Interesting and fun day.
DAY 15 – 17, Sun Jan 16 – Tue Jan 18 - Trip to Mustang Island 2011On
On Monday, Wanda finally found a Hair Salon. We did some much needed grocery shopping (I bet you thought we ate out all the time, didn’t you). On the way home we stopped and ate at Taqueria San Juan Mexican Restaurant (Authenic Mexican food, a little bland). We think we like TEX-MEX much better.
On Tuesday, Wanda did a lot of the things she had planned to do and then we took a stroll down the beach for a mile or so. JW went out to the waters edge to retrieve a shell and the surf got him & he said the water was (Brrrr) cold. Took several days for his tennis shoes to dry out. Wanda fixed Wanchi (sweet and sour chicken) for supper.

DAY 14 – Sat Jan 15 – Trip to Mustang Island 2011
When we left the Malaquite area we journeyed back to Port A and took in some more Porpoise watching. We kinda like that. Another trip down the beach drive and we were back at the MH. High today was 60 but rained almost all day. But, it was an excellent day at the Gulf.

DAY 13 – Fri Jan 14 – Trip to Mustang Island 2011
We drove down to the beach and watched the surf for a while (doesn’t take a lot to make JW happy) then on to the other end of the island (Roberts Point) where we watched the porpoises for quite a while. That, was very interesting. There sure were a lot of them.
We decided to drive (and take the ferry) over to Rockport. One of JW’s friends from SDC (Jim Elkins) had told him to make sure to eat at “China A Buffet” in Rockport. JW thought It was pretty good and Wanda must have thought it was great from the way she tried to clean out the crab legs from the buffet. Not too bad vittles.
Now we are at a McDonalds in Aransas Pass, updating the blog (since we still don’t have WIFI). It was an excellent day and we are both feeling much better. Maybe we can now start doing
some exploring’. Stay tuned, JW says “it’s gonna get betterer”.
DAY 12 – Thur Jan 13 – Trip to Mustang Island 2011
Stayed at the MH (inside) all day. Wanda got several things done that she had been wanting to accomplish and JW, well, he basically sat on his duff the entire day and watched TV. (He’s found a station that is showing old reruns of “In the Heat of the Night”). We still do not have WIFI so (other than using the iPhone) we have to go to a WIFI hotspot at a McDonalds or a few other places (none within walking distance). Stay tuned for more later . . .
DAY 11 – Wed Jan 12 – Trip to Mustang Island 2011
Wanda seems to be getting better (still has a nagging cough) and JW seems to be doing much better also. Maybe soon we can both get out and do some exploring.
DAY 10 – Tue Jan 11 – Trip to Mustang Island 2011
DAY 9 – Mon Jan 10 – Trip to Mustang Island 2011
With both of us still under the weather somewhat, we spent most of the day confined to the MH. We did manage to get out for a while and went to Turtle Cove park (on the NE end of the island, to watch porpoises and big ships come into Corpus Christi Bay. Pretty interesting.
We decided to eat at Whataburger (big mistake) because JW had been saying ever since we hit Texas, “There’s a Whataburger”. After one double Whataburger, JW said, “I don’t think that was too good an idea”. There are only two “franchise” places on the Island, a Whataburger and a Dairy Queen. We should have went to the DQ. Seems like they (the islanders) have an aversion to Big name companys. They want to keep everything “local;”. JW kinda agrees with them. Lots and lots of local gulf businesses with islander names. Returned to the MH and called it a day. All in all, another nice day on the Gulf.

DAY 8 – Sun Jan 9 – Trip to Mustang Island 2011
DAY 7 – Sat Jan 8 – Trip to Mustang Island 2011
Up at 8:00 am. Broke camp and headed for Mustang Island (Port Aransas). GPS said it is 4 hrs 13 min. We thought it was 7 hrs and something so glad to hear that it will be a good easy day. Believe it or not, JW made all the right turns at San Antonio, he was running co-pilotless as Wanda is still under the weather and keeping the couch company. Just south of San Antonio, we started running into a lot of wind which made for difficult driving. (What was that about an easy day?).
JW handled the coach just fine, even in all the Corpus Christi traffic. Made one wrong turn at Aransas Pass (actually, missed our turn because the sign was missing). A mile down the road we got it straightened out though. We did get to put the rig & the toad on the Port Aransas ferry. That was pretty cool, took 2 ½ minutes to cross the bay and we were in Port Aransas, on Mustang Island.
Now, all JW had to do was follow SH 361 down the Island for about 3 miles and we would be at the RV Park. Would you believe that he missed the only Hwy on the Island ! Somehow he went right past Hwy 361 and wound up on the Beach Road.

DAY 6 – Fri Jan 7 – Trip to Mustang Island 2011
Looked for and found pictures and a bronze bust of James E. “Pete” Laney (speaker of the House 1993 – 2003). We believe he is some relation of Wandas. Gotta look into that. Lotsa pictures.
Supper was next on the agenda (seems like that’s about all we do). We drove waaaaay south of Austin (actually about 6 miles or so) and found a “Texas Roadhouse”. Too noisey for me but the food was good.
That’s about it for this day. Relaxin’ and watchin’ the Cotton Bowl. (Gotta say this quietly cuz we’re in Texas, but, “GO LSU”. Have a good night y’all.

DAY 5 – Thur Jan 6 – Trip to Mustang Island 2011
DAY 4 – Wed Jan 5 – Trip to Mustang Island 2011
We’ll be needing to get fuel for the Motorhome when we leave so scouted out the nearest Wal-Mart (Murphys Gas). We found it fairly close to McClains RV Center, but is not negotiable for the Motorhome. Sooo, the next closest Wal-Mart is about 50 miles down the road and way off the Interstate. Guess we’ll use a regular gas station then.
Needed to do some shopping for a few things then Wanda decided to cut JW’s long “grandpa” hair.
Decided to meet with Dustyn for the 5:30 showing of “True Grit”. It was a really good movie (more like the book). Afterwards, we all went to Logans Roadhouse. Very good food and the conversation was great. (For those of you who don’t know Dustyn, he is married to Wanda’s Grand-daughter, Kara, and is a super nice young guy). 9:00 pm, Time to head for the Motorhome and see what tomorrow brings.
DAY 3 – Tue Jan 4 -- Trip to Mustang Island 2011
Wanda woke up with a sore throat, stuffed up nose, and cough this morning. She has been fairly puny today but is looking forward to a better tomorrow. We did enjoy an all you can eat soup, salad and bread meal at Applebee’s this afternoon. We just found out that our grandson, from Lubbock, is here in Fort Worth, so we are planning to have dinner with him tomorrow night and then will all go see “True Grit.”

DAY 2 – Mon. Jan 3 -- Trip to Mustang Island 2011
DAY 1 – Sunday Jan 2 -- Trip to Mustang Island 2011
We wanted to leave, for Mustang Island, at noon today. We left Branson View at 1:12 p.m. We stopped in Branson West to fill up with gas, then headed out to Joplin. We arrived at the Down Stream Casino (where we decided to take advantage of a free night’s camping) at 4:15 p.m. We had made arrangements to meet our friends (John & Peggy Danner) at the Casino for supper. We had about an hour before John got off work so we spent some time in the Hotel Lobby, enjoying the lovely Fireplace. John and Peggy used to work at Silver Dollar City (John, in the parking lot with JW, & Peggy, in Finance with Wanda.) We enjoyed good food and fellowship with them. Peggy was very gracious and brought us some drinking water because we found that the water in our “fresh water tank” was rusty, so could not be used for drinking. Peggy took us back to our Motor Home about 9:30 and we turned in early for a good night’s sleep before continuing our journey to Oklahoma City for a visit to the Capitol.
